MILITARY FUNERALS.

(I'o the Editor.) Sir, —A few days agro Private Jessop, one of our heroes, laid down his life as a result of his patriotism and self-sacri-fice in the interest of the Empire we all so dearly love, but have not all equal opportunity to serve. The circumstances of his death were tragic enough to move all Britishers deeply; and, having laid down his life, surely the least we could have done w*as to mark our esteem of his action by honouring him in his death. I had expected that he would be buried with full military honours, as becomes a soldier dying on active service; but no such honour was accorded him; and I would like to ask through your columns who was responsible. IHirther, there will need to be some lasting memorial to the memory of all our brave heroes, and I sincerely trust that a careful record will be kept, and in due course a fitting memorial erected to serve as a reminder that men were willing to die for the Empire when the greater need arose. Thanking you in anticipation, I am ,etc., AGED BRITISHER.

(The local Defence 'Office received no communication regarding Piivate Jessop'e death. It should bo remembered that he was still connected with the Expeditionary Force, and therefore not in any way under the local office. Captain Robinson said he was only too eager to do everything of the sort suggested in the letter; but the only intimation he had of Private Jessop's death was from the papers some little time after the sad occurrence).
