The garnet is the lucky stone for girjs born in January;. February's stone is the amethyst, the bloodstone governs* March, the diamond is the stone for April, the emerald that for May, the agate governs June, the ruby July, the sardonyx August, the sapphire September, the opal October, the topaz November, and the turquoise December. There is a symbolism in precious stones which engaged couples might do -well-to remember, when choosing the ring. The topaz, for instance, is said to, be the emblem of friendship and fidelity. To *his stone also is ascribed the mystic power of strengthening the "intellect and sharpening the wit. It is said also to be a protection against the perils of tihe sea. "People )of a morbid turn of mind should certainly wear it if all that is claimed for it is true, for it is gaid not only to have the power of cheering its w«arer, but of promoting good digestioon as well, and a bad digestion is at the root of many a fit of depression, as we all know. The diamond is the emblem of purity, innocence, and peace; the ruby that of charity and. love. This stone is said also to have the power of preserving .to its owner the affection of those she loves, and of protecting her fromvfalse friends. The opal is generally believed to be an unlucky stone to wear, but this does not apply "to; those whose birthstone it is. If it is not your . birthstone, you may safely wear it as long as you wear your birth-stone well. Its 'bad luck is said to be mainly in regard to love affairs; so superstitious people would do well to refrain from having their engagement ring set with this stone unless under the favourable .conditions mentioned. The turquoise, when given by a. lover, is said to lose its colour should his love cease, and to change .colour if the wearer is in danger. Certainly no stone changes its colour so quickly.. Some (people say that when a turquoise turns a. greeny tint it is- a sign that its wearer is in poor health.;
