The Department of Agriculture has received the following cablegram from the High Commissioner, dated London, Dec. 16th; — "Wool sales closed strong for crossbreds, but irregular for Merinos. Hardly any New Zealand greasy «*vossbreds nave been offered, and tliero is absolutely nothing to indicate their actual value. At the annual meeting of the New Zealand and itiver Plate Co. at London on January sth .the directors will recommend a divident of 10 per cent, for the year, the interim dividend, paid to be deducted therefrom. A 'balance of £25,000 will be paid to the reserve fund and £10,739 carried forward. The approximate amount of net profit is £70.7391
NATIONAL, MUTUAL LIFE ASSOCIATION. The following cable has been received by Mr F. W. Nicholson, manager m New Zealand for tire National Mutual Life Association :—"The new business for the year ending 30th September amounts to over three and'a-half millions, which, in view of the conditions prevailing in. the Commonwealth, must be considered highly satisfactory. The increase for the year was nearlv one and a-half millions, •baing an increase of £78,000. The rate of interest earned was ±>-+ 17s per cent, and the amount added-to the funds was £710,000. The total funds now stand at nearly £9,000,000, all. of which are invested in... securities. The New Zealand business is exceptionally good, notwithstanding the* events which happened a t the end of last year, as well as this."
