When the thunder .: of: the guns was first heard at West Hartlepool, the in r habitants thought it. was gun -practice. Then they heard explosions in the direction of the railway station and shipyards, j and saw the gasometers and timber yards on the water front 'burst into flames. The weather was haxy and nothing was visi- 1 ble except the sudden jet of flame. The waterworks were partly damaged, and several houses in the higher parts of the town were wrecked.. '"« - ■ Many people ran to the park, where several shells fell in the midst of them. No one was-hurt. : V C u' —.' Residents of Blackball Rocks, five miles from West Hartlepool, saw the ships firing their broadsides and then. turning and firing the ..opposite broadsides. It is reported that : the warships displayed British signals and were, taken for friendly vessels until they opened fire. In one family the father, mother, and six children at Hartlepool were killed. In another case one. child out of a familv of four escaped. " . ,■ Several children ..proceeding to schooL were killed. A shell burst among a group of volunteers, and.killed seven.
