COLONEL HUGHES ON THE WAR

OTTAWA, Dec. 17. The Hon. Colonel Hughes, Minister of War, in a statement to the Canadian public, says it is not likely that General Joffre will make an immediate advance ■ to drive out the Germans from Belgium. Great .Britain and France are -by no means yet ready for a great offensive movement.' Colonel Hughes does not think it likely that • the- war will end soon. Germany's preparations were far more complete than even outside military experts were awaxe. Canada must he ready to arm 8 per cent, of her male population if necessary. He was glad to some extent, that the British people have now felt what war is really like, as it would awaken them to the immensity of the conflict, and cause them to abandon football and do their duty.
