The police this morning receive d a telephone message from Mr R. F. Turner stating that he had picked up at Admi raitv Bay a bottle Inch contained the following message: —"Mr J. Wiudlcbourne and L. Wnidlebourne accidentally drowned while fishing. Dated Sept. 17th, 1914. Both of Richmond/' It has been ascertained that no one of the name given is missing from Richmond. There is ever vindication that the measure is a hoax.

There is at least one person, in Nelson who considers himself lucky. On Saturday he received by the morning mail a. letter containing a draft on the Post Office for two or three pounds. He put it in his pocket. In the afternoon he discovered the letter was missing, and search among his pockets and office papers failed to locate it. Then he recollected that while in Bridge-street- he had had occasion to take out his pocketbook, and thought perhaps that he may have pulled the envelope out at the same time. On proceeding to the vicinity of the spot there, sure enough, was the letter intact, lying in the gutter on the opposite side of the road, having been then, for some four hours.

'A meeting of the Nelson Licensing Committee was held to-day, there being present: —Messrs J. S. Eva-ns, S.M., (chairman), P. Best, E. Trask. and W. N. Franklyc Conditional licenses for the A. and P. Show were granted, from 9 a.n:-. to 6.30 p.m., to Cliarlcs Knight, at a fee of £1 10s for the first day and £2 10s for the second day ; and to Ed. Cami, at a fee of £1 5s and £2 10s respectively. The application of V. E. Spiers for a temporary transfer of license of the Golden Fleece Hotel to Joan Berti was granted, as was also that: of Mary McNeil to carry on her deceased husband's license at the Brightwater Hotel.,

The month of October saw a. continuation of .the dry spell, there being a rainfall of only .56 inch, compared -with 4.07 for tlic corresponding: period of 1913, 1.47 in 1912, 2.62 in 1911, and 5;28 in 1910. The total fall for the. ten months of the present year is 20.31 in., compared with 26.24 inches for last vear's similar period. For the last three months the fall has been only 1.47iu., made up of .55 in August, .36 in September and .56 in October. A welcome showed or two fell yesterday afternoon and should freshen things up considerablv. •
