LATE MR CHAMBERLAIN
"PIONEER OF NEW GENERATION" (Press Association.—Copxrioet., LONDON, July 7. Mr Asquith, speaking, in the House of Commons, said Mr Chamberlain was the pioneer of a new generation. No statesman' of any time surpassed him in confidence and courage. Mr Boiiar Law said there were two principles _as the basis of Mr Chamberlain's political action—a desire to improve the people's condition, and ah almost aggressive .national pride. Mr Balfour said that <as Colonial Secretary Mr Chamberlain liad done the greatest work which, perhaps had. ever fallen to a single British statesman. «He was a great idealist, and had an unconquerable, soul. Be Was a great statesman, friend, 'and orator, and a great, .man. .. Tributes were also passed to' Mr Chambedlain's memory in the House of Lords. MESSAGE FKQM MRS CHAMBER- ' liAlN.'' WELLINGTON, July 7. In reply to the telegram sent "By' the Prime Minister (Mr Massey) to Mrs Chamberlain expressing sympathy with her in the bereavement suffered through the death of her husband, the following cable message has been received by, Mr Massey: "I thank the New Zealand Government and people from my heart for their sympathy.—Mary Chamberlain." SIR JOSEPH. WARD'S SYMPATHY. Sir Joseph Ward on Saturday despatched, the following cablegram to Mrs Chamberlain : ''Deepest, sympathy from Lady Ward, and rnyself in the .great loss "you"have sustained by the death of 'ybur distinguished husband." , WEST BIRMINGHAM SEAT. (Received July 8,: 10.25 a.m.) LONDON, July 7. ; : Mr Austen Chamberlain has resigned 'for Worcestershire. East, and will contest West Birmingham. ' "'
