A THOUSAND LIVES BELIEVED TO HAVE BEEN LOST
(Press Associatk QUEBEC. May 29. The Canadian Pacific lcailway Company's liner Empress of Ireland is 'believed to have collided with the R{?d Star liner Hanover, east ol Father Point. A message receiv-ed by the C*oveiMimcnt says "there is no sign of cither liner. Lifeboats arc visible lor some distance circling round the Government steamier Eureka, -vvliieli responded to the Empress of Ireland's "5.0.5." calls. The Government steamer Lady Evelyn is standing by. The Empress of Ireland cleared yesterday for Liverpool with 77 lYi'st-class, 205 second-class, and 504 third-class passengers. and a crew of 500. The passen tiers included a Salvation Army party going to the International Congress in London. Both vessels are believed to have sunk.
