Dining the cast year the building trade has not been very brisk : but the works about to be undertaken should put the tra-le on a much better ba.si<. The fact that »e\ er.il firms in tile business portion of the cit v contemplates re-building, or making improvements to their present premises, shows that the district is surely making progress. From inquiries made it is estimated that the total amount to l;e contracted for will be in the viciniiv of £50.000 of £60.000. The < hie'f work will, of cuiirs-e, he the new hospital, for which a sum ct £33.000 i.s available. The Nurses" Home will absorb an additional £3000: while the erection of the Cawthn-'n Ohsi rvrUorv will also run into some thousands.
In the city iise'.f plans for new premises for Lighthand and Co.. in 'I ratal gar-street, have been prepared, providing for the erection on the present, site of a two-story brick building, divided into two shops, with suites r.f offices upstairs. No definite time has been fixed for the beginning of the work : but the owners contemplate a start befcue the end r.f the year. It is the intention of Messrs T)ce a ,, -d S :ns to make extensive alterations and additions. The adjoining shops, at presi o cupied bv Mr \\ .j. Smith and Mr C. Scott, and owned by Dee and- Sous, j aie to be pulled down, and replaced bv a brick structure. The .shop at present oc( upied by Dee and Sons will also be altered to fit in with the new buildings. T. uders for the job will be called in •July, and the buildings are to be ready bv November. Owing to the demands of their growing business, the whole of the block will be used by Dee anil Sens. Tile new picture theatre for Mr H. Saunders, to be erected in Bridge-si reet. on the site known as Wilkie's. will be ci nimf iiced immediately. .V contract has been signed for additions to'the well-known ""K" Facte] y. and provide for a- wooden building 130 x 50 feet, with a concrete floor. The present premises, although very extensive, are not large enough to cope with the business, and the addition will he useo fr; tile canning and preserving department. Messrs Xeale and Haddow have in course of erection a large grain store.
