THE MOTUEKA SEAT
A GREAT GATHERING. MR R, P. HUDSON THE REFORM CANDIDATE. fFlom Oar Own Correspondent.! The conference to select a Reform candidate for the Motueka seat took place in the Anglican Schoolroom, Mot-ueka, .yesterday afternoon. There were present Messrs 'I. Pattie, chairman; W. Jaques, secretary ; Arthur A. Paape, Reform organiser; and the following delegates : Messrs J. H. Rankin, W. Nicholson (Mo-t-ueka) ; C-. A. Baigent, D. Burn (Wakefield) ; Alex. Drumn:ond (Tadmox) ; Alex. Sangster (Tapawera) ; W. Fawcett (Kiwi) ; W. B. N-orth (KohatuJ ; M. K. Forsyth, J. Thorn (Stanley Brook); N. Win, W. Cowan (Thorpe); J. A. Guy (Ngatimoti); H. Tunnicliffe (Woodstock): H. O. Holaaway (Lower Mohitere) ; J. Pugh, W. Best (Upper Moutere); J. Fish, H. A. Bishop (Collingwood); J. Bassett (Parapara) ; A. J. Clear (R-ock-ville) ; R. Hyland, J. G. Page (Takaka); Reg. Sparrow (Upoer Takaka) ; R. Scott (Uruwhenua) ; F. E. Nottage, L. W. J. Gardner (Apoto); F. W. Gibbs (Tadmor) ; G. E. St-übbs, A. Benjamin (Neudorf) ; H. Owen (Riwaka); E. O- Newport (Korere); A. A. Paape (Redwood's Valley); J. Price (Baton); G. Cameron (Mata-riki) ; W. C. Baigent (Motupipi); F. W. Faulkner (Puramaboi) ; J. Hunter (Long Plain) ; W. Stobie (Hamama); G. E. Stubbs (Aporo). The Chairman addressed the meeting, and stated that the conference was unique in the history of the electorate. Never- before had such a representative gathering assembled in Motueka, and on behalf of the main branch, he cordially welcomed the 40 the candidates, and also the organiser of the Reform Party. So far as the selection of a 'candidate was concerned, there were no less than six aspirants for the honour, and he had pleasure in extending a welcome to them, save Mr F. W. O. Smith, who regretted his inability to be present but who had signified his intention of abiding by the decision of the delegates. The Chairman then made an exhaustive resume of th© good work accomplished by the Reform Party. 'Mr A.: A. Paape, organiser, then addressed the meeting. Correspondence was Tead from R. W. Simpson (Karamea), and H. Crebes, of Little Wanganui, regretting their inability to attend, but assuring the conference that the decision arrived at would be acceptable to the supporters in then district. _ __ The candidates; —Messrs F. . D bridse (Wakefield), H. Everett (Riwaka), R P. Hudson (Motueka), Geo. Mac--nahon (Tapawera), Ivo Tunnicliffe (Wai;ti) —briefly addressed the meeting, and intimated that they would abide by the decision arrived at, and if not selected would loyally support the chosen candiAfter two hours' deliberation Mr R. P. Hudson was selected. Complimentary votes were passed to the Chairman, the Motueka branch, an the organiser. The meeting terminated with cheers for the Reform Party, the selected candidate, and the defeated canIn the evening the Motueka branch entertained the delegates at dinner at the Motueka Hotel.
