RECENT ALPINE FATALITY
Some belated but tragically interesting notes regarding the late Mr Sydney Locke King, who was one of the three alpinists killed by an avalanche when returning from an ascent of Mount Cook, have been received from London. The "Daily Telegrarjh" publishes a letter from Mr H. Roper Barrett, the wellknown tennis player, who, after referring to the cabled announcement of the dieaster, supplies a brief sketch of his friend. "Mr S. L. King (commonly referred to as 'Peter') wis," he says, "for fifteen years honorary secretary and treasurer of the Casuals Football Club. From the former office he had just retired, but retained the treasurership. A very pathetic thing"is that the club decided to give him a testimonial,. and I have the money waiting to buy the article he should choose on his return to England in April—alas,, now never! MiKing was educated at Highgate, School, and assisted the Old Cholmehans Football Club, in their Dunn Cup tie whenever he could. He .was also a member of the Corinthians Football Club. A keen alpinist, he had mastered nearly, if not all, the peaks in., the Alps, and was a member of the Alpine Club. He was a very good cricketer, fast bowler, and used to play regularly for the Stoics Cricket Club, and latterly 'for Rickmansworth. He was a very good club lawn tennis player, and one of his hobbies was photography. He was also a good amateur gardener." The lost alpinist, who.was.in his forty-first year, appears to have- been a fine all-round athlete and outdoor enthusiast. It is doubtful if the icy fastnesses of Aorangi will ever give up. the remains of the English adventurer and hjs- follow mountaineer, but Mr S. Turner thinks they may bo discovered some fifty years hence three or four miles below the scene of the catastrophe.
