RIDING BICYCLES WITHOUT LIGHTS
WARNING BV THE -MAGISTRATE. SEVERE FINES. A warning was issued by Mr J. R. Evans. S.M., at the Magistrate's Court this morning when hearing a- charge against a young man named Noel Edwards. of riding a bicycle without a light in Trafalgar street at 10.30 p.m. oil 2nd inst. Defendant said he had nothing to say, and pleaded guilty. Addressing defendant, the Magistrate sard : "I am going to put a substantial line on people who ridy without lights. A n an lost his life the other day, and I am going to make a substantial line in every., case."" I am going to make them severe until people learn to obey the Jaw. }on will be convicted and lined 40s" Defendant was also ordered to pay 7s ! costs. Herbert Bradlr-y. 'who did not appear, was charged with riding a bicycle without a light in Waiinea street on April 14th. Constable Berthelson gave evidence as to the charge, stating that defendant, who is a. butcher's boy, gave as an excuse that he had been kept behind to look after a sick horse. Defendant was convicted and fined 20s, with Cs costs.
