MR MeNAB'SGIFT TO DUNEDIN

A large number of citizens assembled afternoon at the public library - to. take, part in the formal presentation of Mr R. McNab's collection to the city of.. Dunedin. In the course of Mr McNab's research work, concerning the eariy history of New Zealand,, fie has collected a valuable library fOntaihinfr almost 3000. volumes, and' this.he ;has handed, over to "the public library: for the benefit of the people of New Zealand, and visitore from other parts. ' _ . In explaining his reasons for choosing, the Dunedin librarv as the repository ef the collection, Mr McNab said Dunedin was the home of his old university., and here alone would her future students be able to take advantage of it when _ a chair of Australasian and Polynesian history came to be established. . The fact ' that both, the Hocken- collection and this collection were available in. Dunedin would be two reasons for that chair going to the University of Otago. The Mayor, Mr W. Downie Stewart, on behalf of. the citizens, formally ac knowledged the valuable gift.
