NELSON JOCKEY CLUB
ANNUAL RACE MEETING
The annual race meeting of the Nelson Jockey Club will be held at -Richmond Park on Wednesday and Thursday-next. Indications point to a very successful gathering, and large numbers of visitors are expected, all the hotel accommodation having been bespoken. " A large contingent "of Marlborough sportsmen are coming, it being stated that every available car has been procured to bring them through.. The steamer arrangements from Wellington are al:o suitable, and no doubt- a large number will cross the. Straits to attend the Club's annual meet-' ing. Locally, a special railway timetable has been drawn up, and should meet the requirements of both city and country residents. With a view to studying the comfort and convenience" of" patrons, the Club has made further., improvements to the' grouncfS?since the last meeting, including the erection of a new judge's box and new blackboards.' The long . spell of dry weather has hardened the course considerably, and a night's rain would be much appreciated bv horse-owners. y "Most of the horses engaged in 'the meeting have already arrived. Yesterday lo arrived by the Arahura, and Odessa-, Mt. Victoria, The Great Monologue are expected by the Pateena tomorrow.
Several horr.es worked the course yesterday, and this morning over 20 were Taken out for morning exercise, including Perohillal Peroneal, Alecto, Pegsrv, Elopement, Excitement, Otakura, S:mila, Royal Sleeves,'"' Achillides, Ru:nation, Eric Boy, Rosemerrie, and a number of trottere. Parisian ran well,' and today's performance proves that .he was short of a gallop in the Cup. Radnor, the hero of the meeting, promises to develop into a Melbourne Cup winner. Of nine starters in the Steeplechase only four finished. Camasade brcke its neck Van Biene, in the second race, broke -through -the, barrier, galloped
I three furlongs, was left at the post at { the start, and finished by running a good second. The results were as fellows : Elirs Handicap : Tofua 1, Brattle 2, Ostressa 3. Sixteen started. Gibson Carmkhael Stakes: Newberry 1, Van -Biene 2, 3. Fourteen started. Northco'te: Dclove 1, Coronatus 2, Atc-ra 3. Nine s.arted. SteeplechaseTinto 1, Tlie Miser 2, Moyone 3. Five horses fell at different stages. Champion Stakes: Radnor 1, Parisian 2, Prizefighter 3. Other starters: Obo, I Uxbridge, HarpL-t. Prizefighter led , into the straight, but Radnor passed I him at the dissince, and going strongly won by three-quarters of a length. L Farewell Handicap: Rattlea 1, • Ta- | danga 2, Hush Money 3. Fifteen started.
