HURRICANE IN SOUTH SEAS

AUCKLAND, March 5. J A hurricane swept Shell Island and caused mountainous seas which swamped Eakaranga and Manahika. The natives were compelled to take to their boats until the storm subsided. Considerable damage was done to crops. ' The islands lie very low and were, completely submerged. , . Aitutake Island was in the track of the storm, but sustained less damage. The storm arose suddenly. After passing over the Shell group it spent itself on the 'Cook Islands. A dismastedi schooner known to have been in the vicinity of the hurricane, has not since been reportled.
