DR. MAWSON'S PARTY.

QUESTION OF FINANCES

(Press Association.—Copyright.

MELBOURNE, March 5. Professor Masson said that. £IO,OOO would solve all the financial problems of Dr Mawson's expedition. Despite this need the Commonwealth's grant of £SOOO had helped to smooth the, financial difficulties. He expects to realise large sums from the sale of the pictures, as well as Dr Mawson's book. So far there is no occasion to be otherwise than cheerful on the question of money. (Received 9.35 a.m.) SYDNEY, This Day. Hurley, of Dr. Mawson's expedition, gives an interesting description of MacKellar Islands group, a few miles north of Dr. Mawson's main base. There were great dredging grounds for seals, and there were also rare gulls, petrels and penguins, which he estimated at 150,000. Adele Lar?d penguins were breeding on the group at the time of the visit.

NEWSPAPER ARRANGEMENTS.

DR. MAWSON'S LONDON CONTRACT CANCELLED.

(Received 9.30 a.m.) MELBOURNE, This Day

Dr. Mawson, speaking at a welcome, said the expedition had brought several tons of rock and mineral specimens, 300 or 400, bird skins, and a number of mammals. The seals types were obtained. There were indications of a ..large area of coal. At present he co'uld not estimate the commercial value of the new lands, but they may have much, and it was only right that Australia should have it, as Australian and British expeditions accomplished practically all the work done'there. He stated that he had made exclusive arrangements with London papers for the main narrative. He, however, supplied certain news to Australian papers. As a result his whole contract with London had been cancelled.
