President Wilson, in receiving prominent callers, gave the impression that he fully realised the gravity of the Mexican situation. He pointedly referred to taintain eventualities that might mean a drastic course. It is understood that if Great Britain allows the Benton case to await adjudication until a stable Government is established in Mexico, the United States will agree to that course. President Wilson emphasised the point that foreign nations had no right to demand that the United States should look after their nationals,- and neither, did they demand it. If Carranza insisted on his right not to deal with any Government in the interest of any other Government, a very grave situation would be produced, upon which the United States would be compelled to take action.
