At the Nelson Club this morning Mr Alfred 'Greenfield was entertained hytis club frjends 011 the .occasion -of his eighty-fifth birthday. Mr' Fell proposed the health of the guest, and wished him many years of health and happiness; Mr Greenfield feelingly responded, and in his speech gave some of the early history of. the Club. Mr Greenfield is one of our ol&test residents, and. held importantpositions under the old Nelson Provincial Cuncil, and ..then took -up duties as. Commissioner of Crown Lands, and ata 'later stage as Stipendiary Magistrate, both in .this district and at Wellington. Mr Greenfield looks very well indeed, and enjoys wonderfully good health considering his; advanced age. The death occurred this morning of Mr Thomas Usher senior, of Trafalgar street, one of the city's most highly respected residents for a period of over 50. years. The late -Mr Usher, who was in his 92nd year, arrived in Nelson by the Queen of the A yon in July 1859, and has ever since resided here. About two years ago he Lad a serious fall, but he made a wonderful recovery for one of his age. His final illness was of lees than a fortnights' duration, and np to that time he was able to go out walking. For over 30 years the late Mr Usher conducted Sunday, services at Old Peoples' Home,' a labour of love which had to be relinquished owing to advancing age.
