WELLINGTON CRI3TINAL CASES. (United Pbess Association.) WELLINGTON., Feb. 13. At the Supreme Court Bernard Smith, alias Haulstcn, pleaded guilty to indecent 'assault, a "nolli prosequi being entered in another charge of attempted serious offence on the same child, aged years. Sentence was -deferred. Frank Collins ■was convicted of theft from the person, and was convicted of theft from the person, and; was remanded for sentence. Charles Vivian Porteous "was charged with failing to account for moneys received on account of a third party, was ■found guilty, andi remanded for sentence. Thomas Coffey was found guilty on charges of. attempted rape, indecent assault, and) attempted carnal knowledge of a girl aged 13, who had been brutally assaulted, and prevented from crying out by haying a sheet stuffed into her mouth. Accused admitted being in the room with the girl, but denied the offence. Sentence was deferred. - CKR.ISTCHURCH, Feb. 13. At the Supreme Court the .following cases were dealt with :—Charles Edward Carson, carnal knowledge, six months; Herbert Jarvis, alleged sheep stealing, hearing adjourned ; Thomas Geary, alleged carnal knowledge, acquitted. The prisoners Owen, Camnbell, McCormick, Smith, Francis Wood, Hill, and Leigh, who pleaded guilty earlier in the wwk to extensive frauds on the Customs Department, will be brought up for sentence on Monday morning.
