SHIPPING COMPANIES AND FEDERATION OF LABOUR
THE COMING CONFERENCE.
INFORMATION FROM DTJNEDIN.
(United Press Association.)
DUNEDIN, This Day. A prominent shipping official, questioned as to the forthcoming conference between the Labour Federation and shipping representatives,-says that it is amusing to see how much pleasure some people in various centres are getting out of the mare's nest. He points out that the matter of giving preference to unionists is not a new thing, but has been exercised in various agreements affecting shipping 'and waterfront industries. Further, -under present agreements the preference clause specifically states, that no serious hindrance shall be placed against any workman desirous of j«ning the union. The present agreement has still six months to operate, and the conference next week is to be held for the purpose of discussing several 'matters -that Jharve" caused more or less friction in the past. He can see no attempt at the prohibii tion of free labour.
