WIRELESS AND DEFENCE

DEMONSTRATIONS IN, WELLINGTON. , AUCKLAND, March 17. Since- the introduction of the New Zealand defence scheme the authorities have introduced many improvements in defence methods. The latest innovation, it is understood, will probably take the form of portable wireless sets tor infantry brigades, and this week the Defence" Department will conduct trials ot such sets, which are made on the Tele-fu-nken principle by 'the Australasian Wireless Company. Mr. Eugene-Kem* hard, chief engineer of the Telefunken Company at Berlin,"is to give demonstrations of'the capabilities of these sets ot instruments in Wellington, and, for this purpose he leaves for the south to-mor-row. Portable instruments are as novel as they are useful. They are able to send messages over 50 or 60 miles in davlight. and will form a valuable asset to" the equipment of the defence forces. The necessary power is obtained Irom a. small jdviiamo which is driven by a bicvcle arranaenient lifted with pedals. One man working these creates sufficient force to run the dynamo at the required number of revolutions to generate the power, which in turn works the sending instruments. The whole outfit can he comfortably placed on one hor«e and is very quickly dismantled ready for action. Sets* are now in wide use for military purposes at Home and on the Continent.
