CORRESPONDENCE

NELSON INSTITUTE

(To the Editor.)

Sir, — I read with great pleasure in your last night's issue ; , k-tu-r .signed "Old Subscriber." relating to Institute affairs. As a continuous subscriber for 25 years allow me to - endorse everything said about the injustice of taking away the librarian's weekly half-holiday and adding to her, hours of work. I believe the reason given for the longer hours' attendance required is "done in .the interests of the town." I venture to suggest that if the question is put before those who use the subscribers' room, and the public reading room, that no *ran or woman would wish the librarian to lose her much-uecded few houm of leisure. She is capable and courteous; the work is strenuous, and- confining, also (at the Nelson Institute) badly paid. I am told by a, Westport resident now visiting Nelson, that the librarian there has a salary of £l2O years, and the assistant 10s weekly, with adequate, provision' for the proper cleaning of the building. I hope all the subscribers will agree with me and: say "We will have no sweating here." Thanking yon in advance. I am, etc., LINCOLNSHIRE LASS. A SUGGESTION. (To the Editor.) Sir, —With reference to that unsightly hole at the Saltwater Bridge. I would suggest that if it cannot be filled, in it be covered with wire netting and a flowering creeper planted, which would be more in keeping with the improved surroundings. I am, etc., PASSER-BY.
