HURRICANE AT FIJI
MUCH DAMAGE REPORTED. (Press Association. —Copyright.) SUVA, March 13. Yesterday the baroseetieal readings indicated that a climatic disturbance was approaching. This morning at '5 o'clock the glass fell steadily, and at 7 o'clock the Government signal gun boomed, giving warning of an approaching- hurricane. At 9 o'clock a. sale was blowing at full force, finally dying away at 11 o'clock. The soap works were totally destroyed, and the Union Company's unfinished hotel was damaged to the extent of £SOO. Other local damage light. Communication with the outer ctuit/res has been interrupted-. In the Rewa Valley the sugar cane and banana crops were devastated for miles. ' \ The Tabasa and the Tavi.uni are safe. The Tofua. rode out the gale in tlr© harbour. The Maranja, having sheltered., reached port ini safety. ■ . ; The Tofua has sailed' .for Auckland, and the Mara-ma for Vancouver.
