SIR J. W. TAVENER
DEPARTURE FROM ENGLAND. A FAREWELL GATHERING. (Pmxsa Association —Copyright, i (Received Feb. 25, 1.25 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 18. There was a large gathering at the Trocadero, Alderman Truscott presiding. The chairman expressed general regret at the departure of Sir J. W. Tavener, Agent-General for "Victoria. The latter, responding, referred to the. good relations with Sir George Reid. It was untrue that the Agents-General had worked at cross purposes. It would be a mistake to abolish the Agents-General, whose duties did not clash with Federal representation. He might fairly say that Victoria had no national debt, because the railways represented the money borrowed. He suggested an Imperial Emigration Department, under a responsible Minister, to co-operate with the overseas dominions. He advocated an extension of boy emigration, as thousands of likely boys were wasted in the Motherland. 'Lord Enimott, representing the Government, proposed the toast of "The Empire."
