DEER-STALKING

THE COMING SEASON. The enthusiasts in this royal sport are just now cleaning their rifies, sharpening U23 their bowie knives, and overhauling their canipinrr gear ready for the opening of the season, which commences on the first of next month. , It hasXbeen noticed by some who have closely followed the sport for years that good heads may be expected after a dryspring and summer. This has been the case during the last few years in the Nelson district to a very marked extent. Three' years back, when we experienced one of the driest summers on record, our local taxidermist mounted over 80 heads, all showing fine timber, and most of them a good number of points, but last season, which followed a remarkably wet spring and summer, the heads obtained showed poor timber and few points, except in a few isolated eases. The following of this sport entails a lot of hard work, but the reward is great when the stalker brings down perhaps a fen or twelve-pointer, which eventually he has mounted and huno- ~n the hall for the admiration of his friends and the recalling of pleasant memories of the hard won prize-.
