Mr Taft is determined to avoid intervention in Mexico City, except in the last extremity. More battleships have been ordered to be in readiness tu leave for Mexican waters. The commanders have been ordered, to land forces at any ports where there are Americans needing .aid, but not to penetrate to interior towns. Mr Knox believes there will ;bc '& great loss of American lives if an expedition is despatched, in consequence of the hostility towards Americans. ULTIMATUM TO THE REBELS. AND THE REPLY. (Received Feb. 15, 9.25 a.i 11.). MEXICO CITY, Feb. 14, . President Madero has sent an ultimatum demanding the, surrender of General Diaz and his forces. Diaz replied with a heavy bombardment of the Palace. , Fighting is proceeding. All business is idle, and a famine is beginning to be felt. The better class of Mexicans are now favouring intervention. The rebels are well supplied with artillery and ammunition, and will bo able to hold their position probably for weeks.
