DISTRICT ELECTORS' ROLL.
AS will-be seen from .the official advertisement inserted by the Town Clerk in this issue, the new District Electors List, upon which the election of Mayor and Councillors in April next will be taken, has now been prepared and is open for inspection at the Town Clerk's Office until Saturday, the 22nd instant. Any objections to the list must be made in writing upon the proper form, and delivered to the Town Clerk on or before the Ist March. The Town Clerk wishes us to call special attention lo the fact that a large number of names has been removed from the Roll in consequence of persons having lost, their rating qualification. Many of these, however, may still be entitled to a. residential qualification, and the Town Clerk is anxious tliat all who may thus be entitled should make earlv application to him upon the pioper foi-m, which is supplied free at liis office, for enrolment. In cases where the names of husband and wife . have appeared on the Roll, the wife through her husband or vice versa, it follows that if the husband has lost his qualifi-
cation the wife -also loses hers, and in sach instances both names have been removed- Again, in some cases v.Jiere a Tvoman has formerly been rated, her name would appear cn the Elector.-' Liist as the person entitled to vote, but the name on the ratebook having been changed to that of a. man, the woman s name would ho struck out Irorn tlie Elect.ore' List and thai of the man Inserted in its 'place, and vice versa. ,Of course t.:> Town Clerk cannot bo expected in every case to know the relationship that may exist. Wherever the relationship ie knowr.. however, the names have brcn allowed to remain, with only the necessary technical alteration. In addition to complying' with the statutory requirements, which only require public notice to be given. Mr Edmonds is, wherever the addresses are known, sending a written notice to the persons whose names have been deleted, but it is obvious 'that it will be impossible for him to communicate with them all. The ne>v roll can be inspected for the time rbove stated at any time during office hours, for which purpose the Town Clerk will keep his office open each day next week iwitil 4.30 p.m. Afl, however, there may be many to whom it will be inconvenient to call during the daytime, the Town Clerk wishes it known that he will be in attendance at his office each evening n&xt week except on Tuesday and Friday, from 7 to P o'clock, in -order that all may have a full opportunity of ascertaining whether Or not their names are 011 the List, and, if not, provided they possess the mvcs l sary qualification, of having them placed thereon. A list of names which has been struck off the T{oll will be posted on the notice board oius'd° the Town Clerk's Office on Monday evening, and will remain there during the whole of the week. The last day up to which claims for enrolment can le received to be in time for the elections 11 April ne~- "11 be We I icsdn v the 2r.d April. Mr Edmonds deserves the thanks of the electors for the trouble lip is taking. His efforts to assist in the iratter will be appreciated by many people.
