TOWN SCHOOLS COMMITTEE

MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Town Schools Committee was held at the Education Board's offices last evening. .There were present: Messrs E: Boyes (chairman), A. Karsten, E. Savage, E. Grove, W. Easdale, A. Wimsett, W. McConchie, and E. Watson. The report of the headmaster (Mr F. G. Oibbs) of the Boys' Central School showed th'at the average attendance for the past month was 95.3, and the total on the roll was now 503. The headmaster (Mr F. Knapp) of the Girls' Central School, reported that the average was 93.4, and the scholars on the roll numbered 621. A number of requisitions were agreed to. ' The Education Board notified the Committee that tenders would be called shortly for the enlargement of the Haven Road School, the .Government having agreed to the grant for this purpose.—lt was resolved to ask the Board to have the alterations made, if possible, during the hop-picking holidays. It was resolved that Messrs Wimsett and Grove represent the Committee at the meeting of the Swimming Club in connection with the erection of baths. The tender of Mr Plum, for £9 10s, was accepted for ashphalting work • at the Girls' and Boys' Central School. The Eiwaka and Wakefield Committees wrote to the effect that hop-picking commenced in their districts about" the middle of the month, but it was the custom to close the schools about a week or so later. The Committee resolved- to close the Town Schools for hop-pickinp- from the 28th February to 26th March.

It was resolved that the Wellington, Christchurch, and Dunedin Committees be written to in reference to the payment of a water rate.

Accounts amounting to £lO 6s 8d were parsed for payment. It was resolved to forward to the Education Board for payment an account for £5 Is Q<J for remedying a defective drain at the Boys' Central School.

Several minor matters were dealt with and the Committee rose.
