Bush fires have been very frequent lately in the back country of the North Island.
The death of Gladys Sykes, aged 20 years, occurred suddenly at her parents' residence, .33 Fitzherbert street, Petone, on Saturday afternoon, says the N.Z. "Times." The deceased had been in normal health, and beyond from slight headaches had madfe.no complaint. Soon after 4 o'clock on Saturday deceased was noticed to appear unwell by a lodger, who asked her if she would like some brandy. Deceased declined, but later asked for some. Her father was called and a teaspoonful of brandy administered, but deceased after taking it collapsed. A post mortem examination was held by Dr Harding on Monday, and at the inquest held hy the district coroner (D r A. McArthur) the medical testimony was to the effect that deceased died from pneumonia. Dr Harding further stated that had a feeble* heart, and that it was quite possible for persons to'be suffering from pneumonia without realising the presence of the disease. A verdict was recorded in accordance with the niedical evidence. . .
