MOUTERE FRUITGROWERS ASSOCIATION
The monthly meeting of the Moute> Fruitgrowers' Association was held at the Jubilee Hall, Lower Moutere, on' the. 22nd January. Air H. Holdaway occupied the chair, and about 30 members were present. Minutes of 'the previous meeting were read and confirmed. Correspondence was read from tlu* Union S.S. Company, Ltd., stating that they could not provide space for peadhe* to Vancouver this season, but quoting freight for apples for later shipment. From the Department of Agriculture, giving terms of guarantee on shipment of apples to England. Resolved (Mr R. P. Hudson, seconded by Mr Tilson) that the hon. secretary f-ommunicate with the- Union S.S. Co., pointing out that the freight quoted by them to Vancouver, together with other charges, would be practically prohibi t ; vc. Mr McKee, in supporting the resolution, mentioned details of an interview Ha had recently in Wellington with the manger of the U.S.S. Co. on ttiis mat te»\ ' i ■ Mr Archer, of Ohrist'ehurch, secretary of the Dominion Federation of Fruitgrowers, being 'present, was invited to address the meeting, and spoke at some length on various matters pertaining to the' industry. The Chairman introduced the subject of tree planting to provide case timber in the future. An interesting discussion ensued regarding planting pinus insignis on parts of the Moutere hills. It was stated that at 20 years of age these trees should be fit to cut, and at present prices would be worth about £1 each. A discussion ensued upon the Pos f . .1 Department's scheme for distribuL: ur fruit, and Mr Archer answered a numlvr of questions as to the steps the jJorninion Federation had taken ; n *.; • matter. Representatives of two firms sent, and supplied quotations for ltd oil and lime-sulphur for the. conr g season. The President referred to Mr f- H Mackay's approaching marriage, and extended' to him the very hearty good wishes of the members of the Association, Others present spoke to the subject, and the meeting joined in singing "For he's a jolly good fellow," and gave the Associatiim secretary 'three cheers. Mr Mackay briefly thanked the meeting for its kind expression of goodwill towards himself, and for its appreciation of his services. The meeting then closed. ' .
