ACCIDENT AT RIWAKA
What might- have been a fatal accident occurred to Mr F. C. Batchelor last week (writes a correspondent). Mr Batchelor rode up to his property on the Umukuri Hills on Sunday morning last.- While leading his horse up a steep part of the track, he arrived at a fallen tree lying across the road. He 'attempted to make his horse get over the barrier, when the animal suddenly swerved sharply round and knocked Mr Batchelor over a bank of some 25 feet in depth. On regaining consciousness, Mr Batchelor, realising that it was futile to call for help, and being unable to mount his horse immediately owing to injuries received, resorted to ingenious measures. Tying his wrist to the Morse's tail, he was drawn along the track for some distance till he reached a place where he could conveniently mount his horse. He was able to ride to his home about 3j, miles away, where he is confined to v is bed, being badly bruised and shaken.
