WHAT TIIE STATE ELECTIONS foretell. (Press Association. —Copyright.) NEW YORK, Sept. 4. The elections in the State of Vermont proved a disappointment to the Progressive party. Mr. Fletcher, the regular republican, -candidate, failed to secure election 'bv a sufficient majority. He polled 17.000 against 12.000 polled by Mr. Howe, a Democrat, while M.r. Mia.tzger, the Progressive, candidate, re?eived onlv 1700 votes. A Republican House will now be to elect the Governor. Political students emphasise that when the Vermont Republican majority falls below 25.000, the Republican party is always defeated at the following Presidential election. A HEAVY PROGRESSIVE VOTE. Later. The Progressive vote in Vermont was 10,000. the earlier erroneous. The Progressives are elated. SERIOUS FOR THE REPUBLICANS. (Received Sept. 5. 12.55 p.m.) NEW YORK, Sept, 4. The result- of the Vermont elections is admitted to be serious for the Republican forces. A similar result has not occurred during the fifty-six years wherein the Republicans have been supreme in the State Legislature and all other offices. Mr Taft lias nothing to' say in regard to the results.
