DISTRICT NEWS.

MURCHISON, CHURCH SOCIAL. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A Church of England social was held in the public library, to welcome Mr W. 1). Willis, assistant to the ReV. Mr, Quintrell, of Reefton, who has been appointed to St. Paul's Cliurch, Murchison. Mr Rogers introduced Mr Willis, and expressed the hope that Mr Willis' stay would be effective and pleasant. Mr Willis thanked' Mr Rogers and friends for the kindly welcome, and gave an outline of work that can be do"ne in this large and scattered district; after which songs, recitations, and games became the order of the evening. A good supper ■ was served, and all spent a very enjoyable evening. SOCIAL GATHERING. The fjarr ily and a few friends of .Mr C. Downie, senr., were invited to.spend a pleasant evening at his new, and spacious residence on Thursday evening last, to celebrate the first anniversary in their new home. The health of Mr. Downie was proposed with musical , honours, and musical items and recitations were rendered, and the thanks of the trends were expressed to Mr and Mrs Downie for their kind hospitality. METHODIST CHURCH. A largely attended meeting of the officials of the Wesleyan Metho'dist Home Mission Station was held on Wednesday evening last, to consider the ad-. visableness of holding church services in St. Paul's, as before, and a deputation, consisting of Messrs H. E. Boyes and Jos. Bix/wn, was appointed to confer with Mr Willis, to hold service every alternate Sunday as heretofore ; but Mr Willis declined to agree to this suggestion, or to make any arrangements so that Mr Common could'hold 1 service in the church; and the committee decided. ; unanimously that divine service should be held every Sunday in the, Public Library until further notice, services .to commence on Sunday, the 25th, preparatory to the arrival of Mr Common. ■ FARMERS' UNION. The usual fortnightly meeting of the Union was held on Saturday, evening last, Mr L.» Morel (president) in the chair. A large number of members .were present. \ . • The usual routine, of. business was gone through. , Letters were received from the_ Premier (Mr Massey) and the Under-Secre-tary of Landsj re the grading and revaluing of the Crown lands of th© ais* tricfc, promising that the matter would' be carefully considered. The secretary reported that the poisoned wheat was doing good some of the members having sent in for a second supply. . ■ A vote of thanks to the, Chairman, Cpn-. eluded,a very pleasant meeting. . A HEAVY LOSS. Messrs Downie Brothers experienced a very serious loss on Friday night and , Saturday morning, when v threeof their best waggon horses died suddenly. .In® carter, Mr Fred Bolt, had been to the Owen with a large load oi timber. One of the horses died at the Owen, and the other two on their -.way home.• / The Methodists and Nonconformists of Murchison! commenced holding services in the Library on Sunday last, Me H. Covin preaching iri the evemngtp a. very good congregation.- Mr- Common, the new minister, is expected to*arrive and corrmence- active duties during the > week, and preach in the Library 1 Pj l September Ist. > • GLENHOPE RAILWAY. The opening of the railway to Glenhope is being looked forward to with great interest by the residents ,of JVlui- , chis-on and 1 district, and if the weather is favourable a largo number will ceed to Glenhope on Sunday and Monday, the Ist and 2nd September. Messrs Newman Bros, also are running » special on Monday, leaving Murchison at 7 alms, and returning the same day. CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. A meeting of the Murchison Chamber of Commerce was held .on ing, Mr Hodgson .(president) m' the ■ chair.. Various matters of interest to the district were gone into, and arrange- ~ : ments made corresponding with the JNel- t son Chamber for the opening ceremony ■at Glenhope on the 2nd September. v STATE SCHOOL COMMITTEE MEETING. . A meeting of the School Committee was held oh Monday evening. Preseiit: J. Bredbuity (chairman), V. liamara, G. Ingram, T. G. Bennett, H. Bunn., and: J. Brown (secretary). A large amount of business was considered, and tlie Committee decided to hold 'a concert and ball in Fisher s Hall 1 October 4tli, to raise funds to pay offtho outstanding accounts of last year. ACCIDENT. The son of Mr T. G. Bennett met with a very serious accident on Monday afternoon." It appears that young .Bennett, with some other boys, was getting firewood, and chopping a dry matai log, when the axe slipped, cutting his foot severely. The boy was promptly attended' to by Dr. Warneford, after one of the boys had bound up the wound and carried him home.
