The Rev. J. Laird, the newly-ap-pointed minister of the Spreydon Baptist Church, Christchurch, arrived from Melbourne on Thursday.

•Mr. A. T. Maginnity, who has been attending the conference of the Reform League,in Wellington, returned to Nelson by the Pateena this morning .

.Miss Glendinning, who, has been identified with social and philanthropic movements in Palmerston North for so'me years past, was entertained" by the citizens last evening, and was. the recipient of presentations.

At" the Oddfellows' district meeting held yesterday a motion was carried expressing the pleasure felt at the recovery of Prov. C.S. Bro. A. G. Shrimpton from his recent severe illness.

Cable news has been received in Wellington of the death at Sydney on Friday night of Mr. Cecil, R. Dix, of the legal firm of O'Regan and Dix, of Wei. lington. The late Mr Dix was a grandson of Mr T. Usher, senr., of Nelson. Much sympathy will be extended to the bereaved relatives.

Mr R. C. Dyer, a well known and highly respected resident of Cambridge, died on Thursday morning, in his 79th year. The deceased was formerly headlraster of the Cambridge Public School, but for some years had lived in retirement.

A Sydney cablo says that Miss Isaacs, daughter of Mr Justice Isaacs, has been appointed his associate, and took her seat in the High Court yesterday. It is the first time a lady has appeared in an official capacity in the New South Wales law courts.

Mr J. M. Rifchic (says a Dunedin wire) has donated £IOOO to the Anglican General Church Fund, which is for the benefit of the clergy in poorer districts.

Adjutant Grieve, of the Salvation Ariry, while sitting in the train froYn Ma'sterton with his head out of the window, was struck by a projecting arm of a tablet apparatus at Pahiatua. A severe wound was inflicted , under the right eye, and the Adjutant was lucky not to'have had his eye gouged out. — Dannevirke press wire.

A London cable states that the following officers passed promotion . examinations for ' the New Zealand Staff Corps :—Majors Hughes and McDonald ; Captains Hickey, Grant, and W. Robinson; Lieutenants C. H. Brown, M'edding, Matthews, Knutsford, Glendinning. K. Fraser, Hudson, Turnbull, Hawkin'gs, Nicholls Thomas, H. Robinson, Burn, Braddell, Dyer, Wood, Carclale, and Wallingford. Royal NewZealand Artillery: Major Hume; Captains Mickle and Sandle; Lieutenant Standisti.

The following reference to the late Dr. Hudson was made by the' Provincial Grand Master in his address at the Oddfellows' Society district meeting held yesterday :—"I know that you all share with me feelings, of deep regret at the death of our late Bro. Dr. Jaircs Hudson, which took place under such tragic circumstances a few weeks ago. He had been a member of our Order for a great number of years, and during his residence in Nelson was the medical adviser of the Loyal Howard Lodge, and, since taking up his residence at Tapawera, acted in the same capacity to the "Loyal Palmyra" Lodge, with great satisfaction to the members ot both Lodges. He was a true friend to our Order, as many can testify. He will be greatly missed, not only by the brethren, but also by the settleis o-enerally in and around the ladmor district.' To his sorrowing widow and family we extend our warm sympathy in tlieir great trial." Subsequently P P G M. Smith moved that a letter of condolence from the District be sent to the widow and ,'fairiily. I.P.L».M. Higgins seconded the motion. Reference to the good services rendered by tho late Dr. Hudson was made by several members. an<L the motion was carried, the deputies standing.
