AMENDMENTS TO THE RlfcL. VOTES FOR WOJiiEN. (Rec. July 15, 8.55 a.m.) LONDON, July 14. Mr -Balfour, in. the franchise debate; said that the .Premier occupied ,an absurd position. While his colleagues defended the Treasure on the ground that.it gave everyone equal rijghts, the Premier was of opinion that to grant , women the vote wo'uld be a national disaster. , .If . the House accepted. women's, suffrage, the Premier .was bound to use the parliamentary machinery, to. effect what heconsidered ' would be a disaster. Ms Asquith repudiated ~the charge that the Bill was introduced' to. catch votes, and declared that the. Bill , expressed the policy which the Liberals had advocated for thirty years. He had never' thought . that. the House would Stultify itself by. revorsing the previous-ly-expressed judgment in regard to> women's suffrage.
