FRENCH MARITIME STRIKE. (Phess Association. —Copyright.) PAR-IS, July 12. Dockers at Dunkirk- assau.ied the police and barricaded the streets. Dra goons dispersed the rioters. Shipping is paralysed. (Received July 13, 10.10 a.m.) PARIS, July 12. The= situation at Dunkirk is grave. Dockers, seamen, coalheavers, carmen, and lightermen are idle. A Paris journal states that the lack ot properly-trained crews on vessels sailing to Algiers is a serious danger. The olti cers are doing most of tlie work, and in wflie cases tn-e crew is composed of unemployed waiters, chauffers, music hall artists, and watchmakers. STRIKE OF CIVIC LABOURERS. (Rec. July 13, 11.30 a.m.) OTTAWA, July 12. A thousand civic labourers .have struck for higher wages. They paraded the streets, intimidating other employees. The police interfered and disorderly scenes followed. Tnere were several arrests. A LIVING WAGE,: 10s A DAY. SYDNEY, July 12. * The Labour Council declared in favour of a living wage of 10s a day. THE '.■ SCIENTIFIC STRIKE." (Rec. 8.55 a.m.) ~ SYDNEY, This Day. Tlie secretary to the Labour Council, in his half-yearly report, notes a general inclination on the part of organised labour* for closer unity, and says that the time is opportune to meet this before a rival organisation' comc-s and there is a split in the ranks which would be a detriment to the workers' interests. Referring to strikes, it is stated that '"a scientific strike is the only strike which can prove successful, and with, a well-discip-lined body of unionists wisely managed, ablv controlled, and directed only where it is necessary to hit the enemy and hit hardest." MINERS' CONFERENCE AND "SYMPATHY" STRIKES. (Rec. July 13, 8.55 a.m.) AMSTERDAM, July 12. The. Miners' Congress, without declaring in favour of the French proposal that when tho miners o'f one country strike those of other nations should strike in sympathy, referred the subject to the International Committee for a report at the next Congress. MORE TROUBLE AT NEWCASTLE. (Received a.m.) NEWCASTLE, This Day. A further batch of men have given notice to discontinue work at various collieries. It is tolerably certain that the. whcilers and surface hands in the' Newcastle district are determined to cease work in preference to allowing the ease to ibe decided by the collieries' conciliation committee. Probably nine collieries will ibe involved. WAIHI DISPUTE. ATTITUDE OF AUCKLAND CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. AUCKLAND, July 12. The Auckland Chamber of Commerce has received from the Waihi Chamber of Commerce a letter inquiring if any proper -organisation- 'has been formed- in Auckland to assist the engine drivers at Waihi to maintain the position taken up in connection with the sl.rik". It urges that there the men were bearing the burden of the tight on the employers' behalf, and unless financial assistance from outside was forthcoming they might abandon their position. A re-nly has been sent that the Auckland Chamber has no desire to favour either side of the dispute in any way. No organisation has been formed to deal with the question of relief. This Day. Replying to the Grevmouth Cha-miber of Commerce, which suggested Unit the Government should introduce legislation to nrevent strikes and lock outs, the Auckland -Chamber states that tlie matter is too big to be dealt with. In a yesterday's telegram it was stated that the Waihi Chamber wrote re assistance to engine-drivers. It should have been the Thames Chamber of C'ommwce.
