EDUCATION BOARDS' CONFERENCE.
CONSIDERATION' OF THE LOCAL GOVERNMENT BILL. WELLINGTON-, May 20. The education delegates to the Local Uovernn: ent Bill conference adopted resolutions that the increase in the number of bodies charged with the administration of education will lead to an increased cost without, securing greater efficiency ; that the proposal to cast part of the cost of primary education, upon the local rates is destructive of the national character of our educational system, and entails new burdens upon the taxpayers without providing any compensatory advantage, while exposing schools to the danger of being starved. The chairman ruled ,as out of order a motion by Mr F. Pirani that education boards be asked to consider a proposal that any amendment m the system of educational administration be in the direction of the establishment of a "central council of education, with the Minister of Education as President, to whom should be entrusted the functions at present carried out by the Education Department. This concluded the business of the conference of education board delegates. This Day. Delegates representing the Conference of Education Boards waited on the Minister for Education to-day, and placed before "him the resolution passed by the ■Conference. The Hon. J. A. Hanan said that a statement would be made by the Minis ter in charge of the Local Gov-irmnert Bill to the effect that an- inauirv was about to be set up dealing with the co?tof education—primarv. manual. -md technical. He hoped that the great question of national education woui-l always be kept above party or faction.
