SUICIDES

AN ENGINEER SHOOTS HIMSELF. (United Press Association..} TE KUITI, May 20. William Henry Adams, county engineer, blew his brains out to-day. The suicide is supposed to be the result of depression consequent on deceased being behind with his work. The Council will hold a meeting to-night. Several contracts which should have been passed by deceased have not been done. Adams was seen at the _oftice at 2 o'clock, and he must have gone straight to Green and Colebrock's store, where he purchased -a gun and cartridges, proceeded thence to Green and C-olebrcok's back yard, where he committed the deed. Deceased was an old resident, and was widely esteemed. He was formerly employed ill the Government Roads Department in laying off district roads, and had been engineer to the Waitomo County since its inception. He lerfVes a widow and family of three children. FARMER TAKES LYSOL. CAMBRIDGE. May 20. Robert iCaley. a prominent Waikato farmer living at Pakerinu was found unconscious on his farm to-day with an empty bottle of lvsol near him. He died with ill an hour of being discovered. Deceased was in comfortable circumstances, but had been suffering lately from nervous breakdown. He was about 50 years of age. He leaves a widow and "three young children. A GIRL DROWNS'HERSELF. WAN jAN UI. May 20. Emma Gilligan. a 17-year-old daughter of Mr. Francis Gilligan, a- well-known farmer of Waitotara. drowned herself on Saturday afternoon. In the morning she seemed moody, and went to her bedroom, where she read some letters, and then burned them. Following this she walked to the other side of a lake, and in answer to her step-mother's call said she was going to drown herself. In spite of her parent's protests she walked into the water and disappeared, life being extinct when the body was recovered. At the inquest a % r erdict of suicide while temporarih' insane was returned.
