SUPPLIES TO PUBLIC BODIES.
A PROTEST FROM. RETAILERS. A meeting of drapers, clothiers, and. house furnishers waW held last evening at Mercer's rooms, Mr:Jtt. Allan in the chair. The report of the deputation to the Nelson College Governors and. the Charitable Aid Board was considered. • The chairman said that he had- asked the secretary to the College Governors if he could . communicate anything that the Board had decided to do in future with regard to soft goods supplies in response to the deputation's 1 representations % at the last meeting of the Board ? The reply was that in future, .when any large quantities of goods were required,' prices were to be obtained, but for smaller sums the Board would continue to do as had been-done m the-past. . 1 The' meeting very- keenly resented this way o'f : doing business.' and after considerable discussion it was yecided that a deputation of traders wait upon the.member for the district, .and urge him to. introduce a- Bill altering the constitution of the .Board; making it elective instead -of nominative. . \ ■ It was further agreed, to await the result of Mr Field's notice-of motion at the Hospital' and Charitable Aid Board's meeting, respecting supplies of soft/goods and furnishines before taking further steps in connection with that body. After some discussion with reference . to wholesale houses the meeting was . adjourned. -
