NELSON ROWING CLUB.

presentation of trofhies

A very pleasant gathering wag held in the Masonic Hall last evening in connection with the annual distribution of prizes won during the year by members of the Nelson Rowing Club. Mr F. McCabe. club captain, was in charge, and the proceedings were quite informal. r lhe captain apologised lor tlu absence of Ur Andrew, the President, and lie very much regretted to have to say that Dr Andrew had notified his intention of withdrawing altogether from active connection with the club and other sporting bcdies in Nelson. Dr Andrew had done a great deal to assist the club, and to promote its welfare in every possible way, and the club was sustaining a very severe loss bv his retirement.

In dealing with club matters in general, Mr McCabe referred to the past year as being 0110 of the most successful in the history of the club. A pleasing feature was that there had been an entire absence of friction or bother of any kind. Competitions in the various races had been much keener than in former years, and much enthusiasm had been displaved bv members in all the activities of the club, and every man had been careful in his handling of the club's plant, which was au important detail in any rowing club. It was satisfactory (o be able to refer to the club's success at West port last Christmas, when tinNelson crew won the three races in which it contested It was also successful mi securing the •Kawatiri Challenge Cup, a trophy presented bv a- Wt-siport enthusiast to be competed for bv crews from Nelso nand> West-port. In the Wellington regatta the crew was not so successful, but a bad sea trip a- few hours before the race begvin. doubtless interfered with their chance.

Mr McCabe- introduced to the meeting Mr Bridge. a prominent member of the Star Boating Club, and. an enthusiastic, oarsman.. Mr McCabe said he never wished to U6fiociate with a better lot of fellows than the members of the Rowing Club. He felt the time had come after three vears as captain to retire from tho position. This remark was hv no means agreed with by those present. During the evening Mr R. P. Giblin, one of the Vice-Presidents of the Club, presented th-e trophies won during the year.
