BUSINESS PREMISES FLOODED.

CONSIDERABLE DAMAGE DONE. When the employees of Messrs E. W. Dee and Sons, Trafalgar-street, arrived at work this morning they found the premises flooded. lti appears that plumbers had 'been at "work on the secoiid floor of the building yesterday attend ing to the installation of a new service, and when the wrrk was finished at about 3 o'clock everything was apparently safe. When the premises were closed at 6 o'dlock there was no sign, of a leakage; and th e theory is put forward that the increased pressure of water during the night had turned on a tap cn winch a new washer had been fixed. The employees at once set to work to salvage the goods, and it was then discovered that considerable damage had resulted. On the top floor only a few shirts had 'been soiled ; tout in th e showroom on the ground floor the extent e>l loss was much more severe. In this portion of the premises rolls and rolls ot tweeds and tailors' trimmings received more or less damage. On the filled with boxes of collars, caps, hats, soft an-! shirts, boots, etc., the water had soaked right through the cardboard covering on .to the goods contained therein. The goods on a large stand in the middle of the room had fortunately been covered up, and thus escaped injury. The damage might "have been a great deal -heavier Ibut for the fact that between the top floor and the ceiling ot the ehow room is a large quantity ot sawdust, which no dou'b-t nad absorbed a rrood percentage of the escaping water. The extent of the damage is not at present ascertainable, as the full loss will not foe known .till a thorough examination of the goods has been made. There is no insurance on the stoc'k foi damage Iby water, the policy earned by the firm providing for loss -bv fire onlj.
