LICENSING COMMITTEE ELECTIONS.
RETURN OF THK MODERATE TICKET. The election of five members to the Nelson Licensing Committee was held yesterday, and,, contrary to general expectations; the poll was a heavy one. Up to about four o'clock in the afternoon indications pointed to a much smaller poll than usual; but thereafter voting became more 'brisk, and proceeded steadily up till closing um»'. There ■were ten candidates from whom to make a choice, and five were wanted, with the result that Messrs Best, Franklvn. Trask, Atmore, and Pettit were elected. The three first-named stood on the "Moderate Ticket," while ot the No-Li-cense nominees—Mesa's Grove, Pittit, McLaren and Watson—-Mr Pettit was the only candidate to obtain a seat. All the old Comniitte stood for re-elect:on, viz., Messrs Atmore. Best, Pettit, M'Laren, and Watson; while the new candidates were Messrs W. Lock, E. E. Trask, E. Grove, and J. Taylor. It will thus be seen that the new Commit-

BLENHEIM, March 12Very little interest was taken in today's poll for the Licensing Bench. Out of over 6000 voters the highest polled by one candidate was 678. Three of the old committee -were re-elected, and two new 'members. One old member was defeated. GISBORNE COMMITTEE REELECTED. GISBORNE, March 12. The' Gisborne licensing election caused great interest. The results were as follows: Messrs Dewing (License) 755, Hepburn (License) 723, Somervillg (Prohibition) 654, Darton (Prohibition) 577, MdLeod (Prohibition) 555, were elected. All -were members of the old committee. Other candidates were Messrs Coleman (Labour) 397, Hall (Labour) 336. Beer (Independent) 285. The first result lo arrive was from Hope, shortly after 7 o'clock, and thereafter the figures from the various booth* continued to come in faivlv well, till at 9.30 only the Oddfellows' Hall return was wanted to complete the city results. It was not till 11 o'clock that this return came to ftand, due no doubt, in a measure, to the heavy polling at this booth. The Returning" Officer (Mr W. W. de Castro) had made complete arrangements for the receipt of the returns, and as they came to hand they were quickly posted up outside this office, a large number of interested people waiting for the final figures. There was rather a close finish for fifth place ■between Messrs Lock and Pettit. Up till the Oddfellows' Hall return came to hand Mr. Lock was in the lead, .but the final figures placed Mr. Pettit on the Committee bv a majority of 29. * Details of the polling were as fol lows:—

BREAK IN TELEGRAPH WIRES. WELLINGTON, March 12. The results of the election of t'he committee for the Hutt district were too incomplete to show definitely who were elected, but the probabilities are that 'Messrs Cotton, Ryder, Cudby. Stevens, and Welch ivill be the five leading candidates. A break occurred in the telegraph lines between Upper and Lower Hutt, and no "provision had teen made to keep the telegraph offices open after 8 o'clock. The returns have yet to come from Upper Hutt, Wallaceville. Wainu:-o-mata. Muritai. and Taita. The results so are: Messrs Cotton 594, Ryder. 505. Cudby 476, Stevens 448. Welch 432. Short" 426. McEwan 422, Waugh 361. The first four were members of the old committee, the fifth member of which recently died.
