WIRELESS AMATEURS.
THEIR EFFORTS IN CHRIST- * CHURCH. CHRISCTCHURCH, March 9. The study of wireless telegraphy has been followed in Christchurch for a considerable time by a number of amateurs, -avs the "Post" correspondent. When details of the .system became known .mail wireless .-tations sprang up aIL over the city, and before loin; fully that} housc-s, mostly in the suburbs, wore htted with lofty aerials. The majority of the stations were not high enough to be of any value for receiving messages, and non* of them had sufficient power to transmit messages any distance. Although regulations were framed to control the rise of these .stations, the ieleirrapli Department for pome time did not move in the matter. Finally the owner of one station indiscreetly mentioned a message he had received from the ' air, and at once orders were issued for the removaL of all stations except a few tor which permits were issued. Only four permit®, were granted by the department in Christchurch. the lucky amateurs bein-- officers of the department, who arc of"course, bound bv the regulations demanding that they shall not divulge the contents of any message they may be able- to decipher. That thev can receive messages from a distance has fteon amply proved lately, one installation having intercepted a message sent from Suva. CHlTjii WAS CHOKING.
