A little light was thrown on sorr« traits of the Maori race during the hearing of a judgment summons' cas e in the Auckland Magistrate's Court the othor day. The judgment debtor, says the "Heraild," was a well-dressed and wailed ueated native, who was called upon to explain why he had not paid a sum tl £95 14s 6d, a. ibalance due on a buria! vault and a tombstone, of granite, which had been erected slightly over two years ago. He explained that the vault and tombstone had 'been erected iby his tribe as a memorial .by his wife, and the total cost was over £2OO. Of this, albout £<io was subscribed, and he himself brought up the sum to £IOO. The triT>e was to raise the balance, 'but had not done s ?- Debtor added that two af his wife's brothers had shared in the property she had left, and they were to contribute largely toward the required -si/m; he thought he could get the money in about three weeks' time, but if he did not succeed he wou3d have to make some arrangement to liquidate the debt by instalments. 'Mr. Kettle, S.M., made an order far .payment, but directed that the warrant 'be suspended until a further order of the court.
