TECHNICAL EDUCATION.

The Technical Committee of the Nelson Education Board, Messrs W. N. Franklyn (chairman) W. Lock, and F. W. 0. Smith, met 011 Saturday. The Director (Mr. A. A. Hintz) in his report, stated inter alia that the manual and training classes in woodwork and jookery at Nelson had commenced, and with such increased attendances that some readjustment of the staff would be required. It- was at present impossible for the cookery instructress to teach all e -classes offering and some assistance was required in the woodwork department. During the first week at the. Nelson Technical School 269 pupils had enrolled for various courses of work, and anticipated that ■ before schooi had been running a .month the total enrolments would bo 350. Details of the estimated receipts and expenditure were given. ' Arising out of the report it was resolved : That an assistant to Miss Sutherland Smith, coskery instructress, bo appointed at a salary of £BO a year, and travelling expenses. That T. Gee be • appointed, pupil assistant to the woodwork classes at a saJa-ry of £2O a year. ; Mr. C. ,J. Hicksori, of Wellington,; was appointed instructor for the''commercial class. There were two appli-' cations. Mr. Hickson has had both commercial and teaching experience at Auckland and Wellington, and latterly was in the Government service. In view of the, readjustment of thf staff consequent- upon the -increase in the work, applications by instructors for increases of salaries, which have been held over for soma time, were considered, and granted to Messrs Thompson, Tomkies and Miss Hosie. f Tenders were accepted as follows: — Timber, 11.
