NELSON LICENSING COMMITTEE.

QUARTERLY MEETING

The quarterly meeting of the Nelson Licensing Committee was held to-day. Present : Messrs J- S. Evans, S.M. (Chairman), H. Atmore. P. Best, T. Pettit, R. Watson, N. A. MacLaren. Transfers of licenses were granted as follows:—From D. Barrett to J. Mi- , Gillivray (Trafalgar Hotel): H. Cann to K. Noonan (Bush Tavern); wholesale- • license from J. SShields t.i J. .Shields ami Co., .Ltd. The granting in the case of the whole I sale license was on the casting vote of ' the Chairman. Messrs Atmore, Best. ' and the Chairman were in favour, and ■ Messrs Watson, MacL,aren, and Pettit | against Mr Pettit he opI posed the granting of the license at the 1 annual meeting on the ground that it ! was an increase of licenses. The license j had been granted on condition that on'y . the stock in hand was to be disposed of. ' Mr Evans said that there had been no increase of licenses at the annual meet ing. as, owing to lapses, the number ,of licenses would still be one short. 1 Neither had the license been granted 'conditionally—it was an unconditional ! license. Mr Atmore concurred in Mr Kvans' , stat:-mc nt. 'I h oolice report on the hotels was , fa\oi.rable in most cases. | th re was an exception in regard to tht Coot Hotel, and the Committee instructed the clerk to write to the licen see of this hotel notifying him that unless there was a considerable improve : nvnt the renewal of his license would be o;>:.osed by the police at the annua' meeting. j the conduct of the Ship, Provincial. and Royal Hotels was reported by tin , police to he only "fair," and the Com , mittee instructed the clerk to write to | the respective licensees to the effect that 1 an improvement in the conduct of their . houses was expected.
