DISTRICT NEWS.
FAKAKA AND DISTRICTS PRESENTATION TO MR. R* BARTLETT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A large number of people, mostly the older residents of Takaka, assembled at the residence of Mr. Rolbert Bartlett, at Motueka on Thursday, 23rd inst. Mr. John F. Rose said they had gathered to do honour to Mr. Bcwtletfc, and to make some acknowledgment of (hi« long and valuable services to the public. He 'had been a meariber of the Takaka Road Board from about thirty-six years untol its dissolution, and of the County Council until about three years agt>. To give some id<?a of the time given to "the public that this meant, Mr. Hose stated that one (period of ten years of his own membership of the Board entailed a total of one year's work. To give some token of their appreciation of iMr. Bartlett's services they asked him to accept a gold watch and chain witfh the following inscription :"Presented to Robert Bartlett by the residents of Takaka if or 33 years* services to local bodies." iSpeetehes in a similar stirain were made by Messrs Joshua Newport, W. Baird, Thomas Symes, F. H. M. iillis, J. P. Hayes, P. B. Packard, A. H. Barnett and R. Y. Langford ; (many (interesting stories .being told of the means of transit in the old days. Mr. Bartlett having returned thanks in a suitable speech, Mr. R. Y. Langford presented a gold brooch to Mrs. Bartlett (which was affixed by Mrs. Langford) as a token of appreciation of her servicts in making it possible for Mr. Bartlett to give so much of his time to the public. Refreshments were abundantly provided by Mr. and Mrs. Bartlett and their fatnily; also musical items, and a most pleasant afternoon was spent 'by all present. Apologies were received from Mr. F. Page and others; and Mr. Rose was asked to. say, on be-half of Mr. Joseph Packard, the oldest inhabitant present, that he cordially approved of all the kind speeches made.
