PROHIBITION IN MAINE.
(To the Editor.J Sir,—Your leader in last evening's (Thursday's-) issue.. under the above heading made instructive reading, bwt was, 1 fear, somewhat belated (in view of recent information received), • and might create a false impression. The article in the "Sydney Daily Telegraph" from which you largely quote "was evidently written (before the recount of vofes—at a time when there was a smal] majority in favour of repealing the prohibitory clause in the State Constitution. Upon the recount being finished' the first result was completely altered, vide the following, which appeared in your cojumns of 12th instl:— "Wellington, Thursday. "From further information received by the Rev. Mr. Dawson it appears that the on in Maine was, 'Shall the prohibitory amendment to the State Constitution -be repealed':' They voted 'Yes' or 'No.' "The Rev. Dawson today received a ifurtbOr cable from the Rev. F. .J. Berry, Bu.perinitendent of the Civic League, and editor of the "Civic Record,' as follows:—'Corrections completpletedl Oct. ,9. No have majiarity, 748. The total vote was aibout 121,u00.' "This refers to a re-count of the original vote on September 11, about 'which conflicting version® have been, received." I am, etc., H. P.
