Tho greatest weakness of .Labour in< (says the Sydney "Sun" lies 'in the. fact that the leaders are not lead.ers at all, but servants. No principle of democracy is violated' by giving on© mau 'power over his fellows ; it is only when, the will of the people is not b/eihind' tihat power that wrong is done. Similarly socialism must find "its redennptipni through 'the- individual. No b'cd'y of men. ever diid liuivtli'inig yet so well as ona man cam ido it. " Whether it be in the control of a gneialt empire, or tih,e managetmenlb of a 's'hop. or the cond.uct of a- junior, tfoot'■ball cilu'b, the one-imam shows invariably come out on top. In the multitude of 'counsellors there may ho safety; but, amid .the thunders >c'f the captains, the connistdltons only mean confusion', and even a bl'undering commander fitted 'with the peculiar qualities' that make for •leadership is a great factor for success.; Democracy would- gain mucih. more were its supporters less 1 extreme. When t'hei •people gave, .their verdict at the Jaist Federal elections the caucus should! havei •met, not to elect a Ministry, but a< leader, and that'loader shoulid have Ib.ee.nl , siuiprcime and aibsoluto dictator, until a •majority of the party deed died! that it was necessary for him to retire. He should duave been given a free "hand', to choose as .Ministers whomsoever he deemed anost suitable, and both Ministers and memfbers should haive followed his. lead unreservedly so. long as he held his 1 posi•fcion.
