FRUITGROWERS AND FEDERATION.

v (To the Editor.) Sir, —In your issue of the 11th.,. inst. there appears a very interesting teport •of proceedings at the. Nelson Di'Strict Fruitgrowei-s' Association, held the Saturday before. One item, in the course of debate. seems to me bard to understand, so perhaips you could kindly 'shed some Light the matter. Your report says, "Mr. Low thoughit it would be better if the JDictmin-ion. Federation reg;6terc d, for all Associations. He would believe in registration if \ they ■could; stop other people (planting trees. With federation they might raafa it s<> good that'thev could make everybody infc limed to go in for fru-ithrowing." It appear to me thtre must be a mistake in the report-, for surely to stop people 'planting trees be a drastic measure', if carried out. It seems as if a necessary move is being overlooked 'by most of t-ho Fruitgrowers Associations, namely, the fact that the Government Inspectors, permit anyone' within town boundariesj and - .tlie. country to ,retain on t'heir land 'trefes utterly useless to themselves or anyone else. They will' calmly drive along the •main roads with infested trees and fruit within measurable distance 'of their heads without; taking .any notice, and m (the autumn aipp-eair to find' pleasure in harrying ; th© fruitgrower within; the fruit shop, if there are seven mussel scale on tJhe stalk of an app.e. . After that grower has spent weeks of work in the a'Jmoat useleee endeavour to his lives, and hr;s near neighbour- is allowed! to breed vermin to any extent lie pi-eases. , . Tnaiiikiinig you fior past favcurs. ;, I am, - etc., . ' EUSSELIi H. TORMijK. lied woe d's Valley, Oct. 17th, 1911. _
